The good are never safe October 7, 2010

"I will tell you this- you are either lying now, or you were lying in the court, and in either case you have committed perjury and you will go to jail for it." (Miller, 45).

This quote is said by Danforth to Mary. In the play, Mary has just confessed to lying in the court, saying the girls and her were lying about the spirits and who was witches. Mary was one of the girls who was naming people as witches and testifying against them in court. As we know, these girls are lying to everyone to save themselves. Danforth does not know the truth about these girls and are going by their word. However, the good like Goody Procotor do have something to fear, Abagail wants Goody Procotor dead. This court is based around the lies of the girls, and whatever comes out of their mouth is right according to the court. A fair and equal trail is never presented to the victim. Danforth's statement does not apply as much today. Today the court of law is has a better system and is more honest.
This is very unfair to everyone in the town. Mary should have never went along with the girls in the first place. She is going along with the pack, and now the girls are against her. If I was Mary, I would confess to everything and hope the court believed me. Perhaps now she will learn her lesson about lying and doing what others do. When I was in sixth grade, everyone thought it was cool to steal pens and pencils from the teacher. So one day, I tried and I was the one who got in trouble. I learned my lesson about doing what others do and always tell the truth. Another relation, is my brother's friends thought it was cool to throw snowballs at a police car. After they threw the snowballs at the car, the police officer turned around and brought them off and told their parents My brother claimed he did not want to but did. So he learned his friends can do what they want, and he will follow his conscience. Mary should have followed hers and not listen to Abagail.
