"In her life, sir she have never lied. There are them that cannot sing, and them that cannot weep- my wife cannot lie." (Miller, 49).
Proctor says this about his wife to Danforth. They are in the courthouse and they are trying to prove Elizabeth's innocence. Proctor is trying to explain how his wife is innocent and he's protecting his wife. However Elizabeth lies in court to protect her husband's name and not admit he cheated on her. This does not help solve their problem, but shows she is unselfish and is putting her husband before her.
I am most like Elizabeth because she is unselfish, honest, and loving. Elizabeth lies to the court for the first time in her life, to protect her husband. By doing this, it shows she is unselfish and just watching out for her husband. Family comes first to me. I protect my brother all the time, even from my mom when he's getting in trouble. Elizabeth is also honest, I myself am very honest. Part of the reason, I do not lie is the fear of getting in trouble, especially with teachers, or other parents. The other reason is because it is wrong. Once, I did lie to a teacher and she found out I lied to her. By lying to her, I got in even more trouble. Lastly, I am also very loving. For the most part, I do not hate anyone. I believe that it is wrong to hate someone, we do not know everyone's past, and we have no right to judge someone.
"My husband is a good and righteous man. He is never drunk as some are, nor wastin' his time at the shovelboard, but always his work." (Miller, 50).
This is said by Elizabeth to Danforth about her husband Proctor. She is trying to save his name and lie to the court. Proctor is a good man, he is at the courthouse trying to save his wife at all costs. He loves his wife and family very much and is a good man. However he did cheat on his wife with Abagbecail and is trying to clear everything up. Everyone makes a mistake in their marriage, and this was his mistake.
Miller is most like Proctor because Miller himself also said he was most like Proctor. He had his own problems in his marriage. He also protected people's names from getting arrested. By keeping the names he went to jail. He was being a good man by not telling the names of those people.
Samantha, terrific that you picked up on Miller identifying with Proctor. And I like Elizabeth, too. She is so loving and didn't you just cringe when she lied in court. Everytime I read that passage I can't keep myself from thinking "Just tell the truth! Just tell the truth!" And alas, she lies every time! I wonder how the play would have been different if she DID tell the truth. What would the court have done then?
ReplyDeleteI agree, I thought Miller Identified with Proctor too. I identified with Elizabeth as well. I really like her character. she seems like an understanding person, i was a little surprised when she lied but I know she did it because she wanted to protect the man she loved. but you should always tell the truth, The truth is golden. i can see hoe you identified with Elizabeth you are a really nice person and as far as i know you don't lie.
